The Smart Home Office: Automation for Working From Home in LA

The home office went from spare-bedroom afterthought to the most-used room in the house, and for a lot of our LA clients it is where their income happens. The technology in that room deserves more thought than a power strip and whatever Wi-Fi reaches it.

Here is how we approach a home office build.

Hardwire the desk

Wi-Fi is fine until the client call that matters drops because the microwave ran. Every home office we build gets a hardwired network connection at the desk. It is a single concealed cable run, and it removes the most common failure point in remote work entirely.

Around it, we build the home network properly: Araknis or Luxul switching and Eero mesh coverage placed for the actual floor plan. Video calls, cloud backups, and the rest of the house streaming at the same time should never fight each other.

Lighting for the camera and for your eyes

Most home offices are lit by a ceiling fixture directly overhead, which is the least flattering light a video camera has ever met. It also has exactly two settings: on and off.

We install Lutron dimming with scenes for the way the room actually gets used. A call scene brings light onto your face instead of the top of your head. A focus scene sets a brighter, cooler level for deep work. An end-of-day scene warms and lowers everything as the afternoon winds down.

West-facing offices in LA have a second problem: afternoon sun that washes out screens and cooks the room. Motorized shades solve it on a schedule, dropping automatically during the worst hours and reopening when the glare passes. You stop thinking about it entirely.

A scene to start the day, a scene to end it

The underrated benefit of automating a home office is the boundary it draws. One button starts the workday: lights to the focus scene, shades to position, thermostat set. At the end of the day, a single tap shuts the office down and the room stops asking you to work.

On a Control4 system, this ties into the rest of the house. The office can go to work mode when you walk in on a weekday morning and rejoin the home in the evening.

See the front door without leaving the desk

Deliveries do not care about your meeting schedule. With a Ring doorbell or a Hikvision camera system integrated into the home, you can glance at the front door from a screen at your desk or your phone, instead of leaving a call to check a knock. If the office is on Control4, the camera feed is one tap away on the same interface as everything else.

Sound, when the room does double duty

Plenty of home offices moonlight as a den or reading room. A pair of in-ceiling Episode or Triad speakers gives the room proper audio for focus playlists during the day and whatever the evening calls for, zoned separately from the rest of the house, with no desk clutter.
