What Is Smart Home Installation? A Los Angeles Homeowner's Guide

October 12, 2026 7 min read

Smart home installation is the design, wiring, and programming of one system that lets lighting, shades, climate, security, cameras, and audio and video run from one app and one remote. It is different from buying smart devices and pairing them yourself: an installer plans which devices go where, runs the wiring the system depends on, sets up the network that carries it, and programs scenes and schedules so the pieces work together instead of as a drawer full of separate apps. At LA Smart Home Systems that system is Control4, installed by a licensed C-7 low voltage contractor (CSLB #949232) and programmed in-house.

What does a smart home installation include?

Part of the jobWhat it covers
DesignA walkthrough of the home, a list of what you want to control, and a plan for where keypads, panels, speakers, cameras, and shades go.
WiringStructured wiring for the network, speakers, cameras, and shade power, run during framing on a new build or fished through finished walls in an existing home.
NetworkA home network sized for the system, so automation, streaming, and cameras stay reliable. We install Araknis networking and Eero Wi-Fi.
DevicesThe controller, keypads and touch panels, lighting and shade hardware, thermostats, cameras, and audio and video equipment as scoped.
ProgrammingScenes, schedules, and rules: "Goodnight" turns off lights, closes shades, and arms security; the theater dims when you press play.
Commissioning and walkthroughTesting every device and scene, then showing the household how to use it.
SupportChanges and help after the install from the same team that built the system.

Which systems can a smart home control?

Lighting and motorized shades (we install Lutron), climate, security and cameras, door stations and intercom, home theater, and multi-room audio. Control4 ties them together on one app, one remote, touch panels, and voice. You can start with one or two systems and add the rest later; the controller does not change.

How long does smart home installation take?

A single-room system, such as a home theater or a few audio zones, is usually installed in one to three days. A whole-home Control4 system tying together lighting, shades, climate, security, and AV typically runs two to four weeks from rough-in to final programming. New construction is coordinated with the builder so wiring goes in during framing.

Can an existing home be made smart without opening walls?

Usually, yes. Wireless lighting, thermostats, and shades retrofit into most homes with little or no new wiring. Where a wire matters, for a projector, an equipment rack, or reliable network backhaul, it is fished through finished walls and finished with recess mount plates. The details for older homes are in smart home retrofits for older LA homes, and new builds are covered in new construction pre-wire.

What is the difference between DIY smart devices and professional installation?

DIY devices each bring their own app, rely on Wi-Fi that was not planned for them, and stop at the edge of what one brand makes. A professionally installed system is planned around the home, wired where reliability matters, programmed so systems work together, and supported by someone accountable for it. The trade-off is cost and a design conversation up front; what moves that cost is explained in how much smart home installation costs in Los Angeles.

How do you choose a smart home installer?

Check the license (a California C-7 low voltage license you can look up with the CSLB), the manufacturer standing (we are a Control4 Authorized Platinum Dealer), reviews you can read yourself (153 Yelp reviews at 4.7 stars), and whether the same team designs, installs, programs, and supports the system. A full checklist is in how to compare home automation companies in Los Angeles. The scope we install is on the smart home installation page.

Not always. Wireless lighting, thermostats, and shades retrofit into most homes with little or no new wiring. Wiring is added where reliability matters, such as for a projector, an equipment rack, cameras, or network backhaul.
Can I start small and add more later?
Yes. Most clients start with lighting and audio and video in the rooms they use most, then add shades, climate, and cameras. The Control4 controller stays the same as the system grows.
