How Much Does Smart Home Wiring Cost in a Los Angeles Renovation?

November 2, 2026 6 min read

Smart home wiring during a Los Angeles renovation is priced by the runs: how many locations get cable, how far each run travels to the equipment room, and whether the walls are open when the crew arrives. That last point moves the number more than anything else. Labor follows the cable, and a run that takes minutes in a framed wall takes patching, painting, and attic work once the drywall is closed. We do not publish price ranges because two homes with the same square footage can need very different systems. What we can do is show you exactly what moves the number, so you walk into the consultation knowing which decisions are yours to make.

Every project is quoted after a free on-site consultation, so the number reflects your home and not a template. You get an itemized proposal that separates equipment, wiring, programming, and labor before any work starts. Book it at our contact page or by calling (424) 301-7661.

What drives the cost of smart home wiring?

DriverWhat it does to the numberHow to keep it in check
Open walls or finished wallsDuring framing or a gutted remodel a crew can rough in a whole house in days. In a finished home the same runs mean fishing cable, cutting and patching, paint, and attic or crawlspace work, and every hour of that is on the proposal.Wire while the walls are open. If only part of the house is being remodeled, wire that part fully and run conduit toward the rest.
Number of locationsEvery TV, speaker, keypad, camera, access point, and motorized shade is a run.Walk the plans room by room and mark what you will actually use. The list is the scope.
Distance to the equipment roomEvery run lands in one place. A closet in the middle of the house shortens every cable; a garage corner lengthens them all.Place the equipment room at the plan stage, with power and ventilation, before the electrician finishes rough-in.
Conduit for laterEmpty conduit from the equipment room to key locations costs little during the build and makes future additions a pull instead of a demolition.Run it to the theater wall, the outdoor areas, and any room whose plan is not final.
Trade coordinationLow-voltage is a separate trade. When it is scoped alongside the electrician, both happen in one pass; when it is an afterthought, it happens after paint.Bring the integrator in when framing is underway and before electrical rough-in is finished.

What gets wired in a smart home renovation?

Pre-wire is the structured cabling every later system depends on. On a typical whole-home project it covers Cat6 to every TV, access point, camera, and keypad location, speaker wire to every audio zone indoors and out, low-voltage wiring to every window that will get a motorized shade, conduit from the equipment room to key locations for anything not yet decided, and a dedicated equipment closet or rack location with power and ventilation. The equipment does not need to be chosen yet. The wire does. See the full pre-wire guide for LA builds and remodels.

Why does finished-wall wiring cost more?

Because the cable is the cheap part and the access is the expensive part. In a framed wall the crew staples cable to studs and moves on. In a finished home every run has to find a path: down from the attic, up from a crawlspace, behind a baseboard, or through a wall that gets opened and closed again. Older Los Angeles homes with plaster over lath take more care still. The work is routine for a licensed C-7 contractor, and the hours show up on the itemized proposal under wiring rather than under equipment, which is exactly why wiring during a remodel is the cheapest thing you will ever add to a house and the most expensive thing to add later.

What if the renovation is only one room?

Wire that room completely and run conduit toward the rooms that are not open. A kitchen or primary suite remodel is the moment to get Cat6 to the TV wall, speaker wire into the ceiling, and shade wiring to the windows, even if the shades and speakers come in a later phase. The smart home retrofit guide for older LA homes covers what the attic and crawlspace will give you for the rooms that stay closed.

How is wiring priced on the proposal?

Separately. The itemized proposal splits equipment, wiring, programming, and labor, so the wiring portion is visible on its own line and you can see how it changes if locations are added or removed. There is no published per-run price because the path of each run decides the labor, and that is only known after the free on-site consultation. The broader cost drivers for the whole system are on the smart home installation cost page.

What is included when LA Smart Home Systems wires a renovation?

A site walk with the builder or homeowner, a marked location list, wiring diagrams the electrician can work from, the cable runs themselves, conduit where it earns its place, and a labeled landing point in the equipment room. Trim-out comes after paint: speakers, keypads, cameras, access points, and shade motors go in, and Control4 and Lutron lighting control programming happen in that phase. Design, install, and programming stay under one roof as a Control4 Authorized Platinum Dealer and licensed C-7 contractor.

Common questions

Questions people ask about this

How much does smart home wiring cost in a Los Angeles renovation?
It is priced by the runs: how many locations get cable, how far each run travels to the equipment room, and whether the walls are open when the crew arrives. Open walls during a remodel cost far less per run than fishing cable through a finished home. Every project gets an itemized proposal after a free on-site consultation, with wiring on its own line; no price ranges are published because the path of each run decides the labor.
Why does wiring a finished home cost more than wiring during a remodel?
Labor follows the cable. During a renovation the walls are open, so a crew can rough in a whole house in days. In a finished home the same runs mean fishing cable, patching, painting, and attic or crawlspace work, and every hour of that is on the proposal.
What should be wired during a renovation even if the equipment comes later?
Cat6 to every TV, access point, camera, and keypad location, speaker wire to every audio zone, low-voltage wiring to every window that may get a motorized shade, conduit from the equipment room to key locations, and a dedicated equipment closet with power and ventilation. The equipment does not need to be chosen yet; the wire does.
When should the integrator be brought into a Los Angeles remodel?
When the plans are done and framing is underway, before electrical rough-in is finished. Earlier is better: at the plan stage the equipment room can be placed where it shortens every run, and the low-voltage and line-voltage work can happen in one pass.
Is wiring itemized on the proposal?
Yes. The proposal separates equipment, wiring, programming, and labor, so you can see the wiring portion on its own and how it changes when locations are added or removed.
Does the renovation have to cover the whole house to be worth wiring?
No. Wire the rooms that are open completely and run conduit toward the rooms that are not. A single-room remodel is still the moment to get cable into that room's walls and ceiling.
