Why Your Wi-Fi Dies in the Back Bedroom (and How We Fix It for Good)

The most common complaint we hear on a first walkthrough has nothing to do with theaters or cameras. It is the Wi-Fi. The back bedroom gets one bar. The video call freezes in the office. The TV by the pool buffers every four minutes.

This is not an internet problem. Most LA homes have plenty of bandwidth coming into the house. It is a coverage problem, and it comes down to one router in a closet trying to reach every corner of a building it was never designed to cover.

What actually kills the signal

Wi-Fi is radio. Radio does not like walls, and LA has some of the most signal-hostile walls in the country.

Plaster and lath in the 1930s-to-1950s homes across Toluca Lake, Pasadena, and Glendale is backed with metal mesh that behaves like a cage. Stucco exteriors have wire mesh underneath. Hillside homes in Studio City and Bel Air are long and narrow, so the router at one end is a hundred feet and six walls from the other. Newer builds in Calabasas use radiant barrier in the roof and low-E glass that reflects signal back inside.

Put a single router at the front of any of these homes and the back half is dead. No firmware update fixes that.

Why the extender made it worse

The first thing most people try is a plug-in extender from a big-box store. It picks up a weak signal and rebroadcasts an even weaker one, on the same channel, while cutting the speed in half. The bars go up. The experience does not.

Mesh kits are better, but wireless mesh still depends on each node hearing the last one through the same walls that caused the problem. It helps in a small house. In a large one it moves the dead zone instead of removing it.

How we build a home network

A real home network starts with a wired backbone. We run Cat6 from a central equipment location to every access point location, so each access point has a full-speed hardwired connection and only has to cover its own zone.

Then we place the access points based on the floor plan. Not one per floor. One per coverage area, ceiling-mounted where possible, sized to the construction. On Araknis and Luxul hardware the access points hand devices off to each other as you walk through the house, so a phone on a call never notices.

The equipment lives in a rack or a structured wiring panel, with a business-grade switch and router underneath. Guest traffic is separated from the family network. Cameras, thermostats, and the multi-room audio system get their own segment so a streaming TV cannot slow down a work call.

For smaller homes and condos, an Eero mesh with hardwired backhaul between nodes covers the space at a lower cost. We use it where it fits and Araknis where it does not.

Every other system rides on this

This is the least exciting line on any proposal and the one we refuse to skip. Control4, cameras, Lutron, streaming, the doorbell, the thermostat: every one of them lives on the network. When the network is a consumer router, every one of them inherits its dropouts.

What it involves

A standalone network project on a typical single-family home is one to two days of work: cable runs, access point mounting, rack or panel install, and configuration. Finished walls are not a problem. We fish cable through attics and crawlspaces every week.
