Security
Security camera systems have improved dramatically in the last five years. 4K resolution, AI-powered detection, and cloud or local storage are all available at prices that were out of reach for most homeowners a decade ago. But the options are also confusing, and the wrong system creates more noise than protection.
Here is what to understand before you invest in cameras for your home.
Resolution matters less than placement
The single biggest mistake in residential camera installs is prioritizing camera count and resolution over placement and coverage design. A 4K camera aimed at the wrong angle gives you a beautiful image of the wrong thing.
Before we place a single camera on any property, we walk every entry point, every parking area, and every perimeter zone. The goal is to eliminate blind spots, the areas that are not covered by any camera angle. Blind spots are where incidents happen and go unrecorded.
Placement comes first. Hardware selection follows.
IP cameras versus consumer cameras
Consumer cameras, Ring sticks, Wyze, Arlo, are fine for renters and for properties where a professional installation is not practical. They have real limitations for a primary residence.
Consumer cameras run entirely through the cloud. They depend on Wi-Fi throughout the property, upload footage to a third-party server, and require ongoing subscription fees for extended storage. If the Wi-Fi drops or the service changes its pricing, your system degrades.
IP cameras record locally to a Network Video Recorder on your property. The footage stays on your hardware. The system works during an internet outage. You are not paying a monthly fee for storage. For a primary residence, this is the architecture that makes sense.
We install Hikvision 4K IP cameras paired with AI-capable NVRs. The AI layer is what makes the alerts usable.
AI detection makes alerts worth having
A standard motion camera sends you an alert every time a leaf blows across the frame. Most homeowners turn off alerts within a week because the noise is unusable.
AI-capable NVRs can distinguish between a person, a vehicle, and an animal. They can trigger an alert when a person crosses a defined line into a protected zone, not when a squirrel moves through the same frame. You get notified on what matters. You stop ignoring the system.
We configure custom detection zones and alert thresholds during install so the system is calibrated to your property before we leave.
Remote viewing and Control4 integration
The Hikvision NVR integrates with Control4 and Alarm.com so you can pull up a camera feed from the same app you use for your lights and thermostat. No separate app, no separate login. The feed is accessible anywhere you have a phone connection.
For properties with existing ADT monitoring, we can integrate the camera system into the ADT platform for full monitored security with professional response.
What about Ring?
Ring video doorbells and outdoor cameras are a legitimate product and we install them when the client specifically wants them. They work well as a supplemental layer on top of an IP system, particularly for the front door where the Ring ecosystem has useful features.
For a primary residential security camera system, we recommend IP cameras on a local NVR over Ring alone. The resolution, storage architecture, and alert quality are meaningfully better at similar price points.
Getting a quote
Security camera projects vary too much to quote without seeing the property. A 2,000 square foot home in Sherman Oaks with three entry points is a different project than a 6,000 square foot Malibu property with a gate, a garage, a pool area, and a detached structure.
We offer a free on-site walkthrough for any security camera project. We will map the coverage zones, recommend the camera placement, and come back with a specific proposal. No obligation.
